Dog Weight Loss

Dog Weight Loss Dog weight loss is a very significant problem. Do you have a fat dog? They are everywhere! There is no magic dog weight calculator – the various breeds are too different, and the green bean diet for dogs is not a healthy alternative – they are meat eaters! The best dog food for weight loss depends on the dog (breed, sex, age) and what you expect from him. We can assist you in determining a healthy weight for your dog (or cat). We will then devise an activity program, and select a low-calorie dog food that will get your dog losing weight for good. An overweight dog is not healthy, and not the happy, active companion you desire. Who among us has not bought a weight loss exercise video? We can devise a dog exercise program for weight loss just as well. We love seeing these hefty dogs become fit and active family members again with a long life ahead of them.

Our dog swimming pool is a big part of the early work in weight loss. Swimming is an aerobic exercise without the stress on joints caused by running, and most dogs love it. Our dog training groups are often used as an exercise opportunity as well. Pet obesity is an epidemic. If you think your couch potato dog is heading down this path, please call us for a weight loss consultation. You’ll be glad you did!

We are not forgetting the overweight cat! Outdoor cats are rarely overweight, but once we bring them indoors and they do nothing but lounge on pillows all day watching the soaps, that naturally athletic physique is quickly covered up with a bit of body fat. In a few weeks, we will go over some simple exercises you can teach your cat to help regain fitness and have fun.

American Veterinary Medical Association

The AVMA estimates that nearly 52% of American pets are significantly overweight – (Association for Pet Obesity Prevention 2013). Published reports indicate over 70% of our pets carry extra pounds. We develop an individual weight loss program based on your dog’s medical history and activity level to help your dog lose weight, and help you manage them in the future. Obesity leads to many health issues that not only take a toll on your pet’s well being and decrease its lifespan but can prove costly to treat and/or manage. Anybody is healthier and stronger at an ideal weight. Weight loss is not as daunting a task as you might think.

Data collected by the American Veterinary Medical Association indicates that more than half of the dogs in our country are significantly overweight, and the percentage is nearly that high for cats as well. Overweight animals are at high risk for orthopedic injury, secondary illnesses, and muscle atrophy. Fat itself causes inflammation, so they don’t feel as good as leaner animals and their quality of life, and longevity suffers. We need to do the best we can to ensure that our pets have a long and healthy life. If you think that your dog or cat might be overweight or obese, please reach out to us to see how we can help.

Cat – Dog Obesity-related diseases:

Skeletal & joint stress leading to injury
Inability to exercise enough to maintain fitness
    Heart disease
    Fatty liver disease
    Diabetes

We want to help you enjoy your pet for as long as possible, and help it have a healthy and active life. After a thorough evaluation by your veterinarian, we will set up a nutrition plan accounting for proper food and treats (of course!). We will start on a fun exercise plan that gradually and safely gets your dog and cat in shape while burning the necessary calories. We will have weigh-ins, swimming, and gym time. The amount of time spent with us v/s following our workout program at home, is up to you.

Our goal in offering pet weight loss is to help you have a dog or cat that is active and strong – and a happier, healthier family member.
